GSB Sentral Sdn Bhd (GSB Sentral), in partnership with Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), today pledge to plant 1,000 trees within the Kuala Lumpur Sentral and 348 Sentral developments at the launching of 1000 plants green programme, held at Sooka Sentral, Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

GSB Sentral is committed to plant an additional 1,000 trees over a period of time as part of MRCB’s greening of Kuala Lumpur Sentral development and Jalan Tun Sambanthan (part of Brickfields).

The event, officiated and witnessed by, Yang Berhormat Senator Dato’ Raja Nong Chik bin Dato’ Raja Zainal Abidin, the Federal Territories Minister and Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Ahmad Fuad bin Ismail, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, also saw the planting of two trees of the plumeria species, more commonly known as frangipani trees at the entrance of Sooka Sentral Lifestyle centre, Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

“The Greening of Kuala Lumpur Sentral and 348 Sentral developments is part of our efforts on sustainable development. This step of planting more trees within Kuala Lumpur will contribute to a better environment and help address the carbon footprint of the city,” said Yang Berhormat Senator Dato’ Raja Nong Chik.

“This effort should serve as an example of the many ways that we can make integrated developments greener and healthier by being conscious of a greener environment.  It is always difficult for developers to adopt new approaches to construction but it is a challenge that we are willing to face,” added En. Shahril Ridzuan, the Group Managing Director of MRCB.

Mohd Imran Dato’ Mohammad Salim, the director of GSB Sentral, echoed Shahril’s sentiments. “Building eco-friendly projects means that besides focusing on developing buildings that are attractive and energy saving, we also need to preserve nature and the environment in a more sustainable manner,” he said, citing the tree planting project in conjunction with the building of 348 Sentral as a case in point.

348 Sentral is a new development, built on the green concept that started in May this year, and is slated to be completed by Q3 2012. GSB Sentral is looking to pursue the Green Building Index (GBI) Malaysia Gold rating and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Environment Building Accreditation. Shell People Services Berhad, the new anchor tenant at 348 Sentral, also shares the same green development concept as they will occupy 60% of the office tower over the next 15 years.

Beside this effort, MRCB has also adopted and integrated a set of corporate responsibility policy in our business policy with the aim of protecting, preserving and improving the environment as well as uplifting the community by contributing to the realization of better, healthier and harmonious society.

MRCB has also won 2 awards at the recently concluded ACCA Malaysia Sustainability Reporting Awards 2009 (ACCA MaSRA). MRCB was recognised as the winner for the “Environmental Performance Report” and “Special Mention – Assurance Approach.”
